How to Change Your Life

“Have you tried turning it off and on again?”

Often the solution to a problem is less complex than we originally perceive it to be. Humour aside, turning your computer off and on again, or signing in and out of your software can solve a multitude of issues. Maybe we should all apply this simplistic approach more often in life.

Are you ready for a change?

If you are reading this blog post, the chances are that you feel the need to change your life. Scary stuff right? Let’s start by turning that emotion around. That feeling, that twist in the pit of your stomach, the nerves that you feel when you really start to think about making big positive changes in your life – that is called excitement, an emotion that you should feel before you go on a big adventure. An emotion that should be embraced and, rather than fill you with fear, it should reassure you that you are not just alive, you are living.

Positive thinking for a positive change

jim_carreyA video of Jim Carrey’s Commencement Address at the 2014 MUM Graduation went viral earlier this year and for good reason. The concept of intention and visualisation is not new but Jim totally blew people way with the simple idea that if we believe it to be true, if we believe it to be possible and let go of how it will come into fruition, then good things will happen in our lives.

“Fear is going to be a player in your life but you get to decide how much. You can spend your whole life imagining ghosts, worrying about the pathway to the future. But all there will ever be is what is happening here and the decisions we make in this moment, which are based on either love or fear. So many of us choose our path out of fear disguised as practicality. What we really want seems impossibly out of reach and ridiculous to expect so we never dare to ask the universe for it. I am saying I am the proof that you can ask the universe for it… please.  And if it doesn’t happen for you right away, it is only because the universe is so busy fulfilling my order – party size!” Jim Carrey, MUM Graduation Address 2014.

Jim then goes on to talk about learning from his fathers mistakes relying on a ‘safe’ job that turned out not to be so safe. We need to let go of any prehistoric ideas that any given job is safe or pathway is ‘normal’. Our lives are ours for the taking. We get to choose how we live our life and even when something seems impossible – reach for it anyway and let go of how it will come to pass.

There are always new opportunities for a fresh start

Running away from a problem is not always the solution but if you really do get to a point in your life when you feel stuck. Like your life isn’t going in the direction you would like it to, maybe it is time to hit restart.

In 2009 I was drowning in a life I felt was ‘normal’.  I was unhappy but felt unjust being so. It took the death of my family dog to kick me into gear. This may sound silly but for me it was a reminder of the finality of life and it helped me to forget my fears and just take action. I hit restart, left my job, my husband, my home and went to university full-time.  It hasn’t been easy and I have many more orders pending with the universe but I feel true to my own path now. I feel like I am living MY life not one that is the sum of my fears or has been written for me by previous generations.

Before you push that button

Before you start making big changes in your life, ask yourself two questions:

  1. Are these changes going to improve your life?
  2. Will these changes impact your loved ones?

If the answer is yes to the first question then go for it! If you have a children, a partner or loved ones that rely on you then making big changes can be a lot more daunting. Be open, discuss these changes with your family and take them with you on a new positive journey.

Are you in a relationship that is making you unhappy? Then cut that dead wood lose and get ready to fly high!

Learning how to move on…

If there are people around you that misunderstand you often and make you feel bad about yourself – move away from those people. There are plenty more of us in the world who will get you and enjoy all that you are. I am starting to believe that as we move through life we seek out our tribe with the ultimate goal to become both individually and collectively stronger and wiser.

Life really is too short to waste time doing anything other than what you feel compelled to do. Embrace the possibilities, live as you want to and most of all… enjoy every minute of it knowing that you are following your own path.
